In the history of the music industry, no award has more impact on an artists' career than the Grammys, and this is because, unlike other awards, the Grammys recognize content and creativity over hype and trends.
If we are being honest with ourselves and checkthe criteria required to be nominated for a Grammy Award, we cannot count the number of Nigerian artists who produce music with content worthy enough for a Grammy Award nomination, and that is the reason why Burna Boy is the only one from here to ever win this award with his own work. 💯
Now, if we check the artist nominated in that Best African Music Performances category, Tyla's "Water" deserved to win 100%. Just check the content of each song and be true to yourself.
We have songs from Nigerian stars like "Unavailable," "Rush", and "Amapiano," that clearly have no impactful message. "Water" by Tyla might not have a very deep and impactful message, but when we want to check on the starts, her song clearly outperforms any other song in this category globally.
We love Davido and wanted him to win, but saying the Grammy Award is worthless because no Nigerian artist won is very bitter of us. There is no award that recognizes real value in music than the Grammys, and there is no award more popular than it.
Let's keep our differences aside and celebrate Tyla for this win. And let's remind our African stars that music is not all about beautiful beats and 100 million Niara music videos. We need songs that add value to our community.
