Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali has been suspended from football for 10 months by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) for breaking Italian gambling regulations. Tonali admitted to betting on matches in which he played during his time at Milan.
The suspension will come into effect immediately, meaning that Tonali will miss the rest of the 2023/24 season and Euro 2024. He will also be required to undergo an eight-month rehabilitation period as part of the agreement.
Tonali's suspension is also a reminder of the dangers of gambling for professional athletes. Betting on matches in which you are involved is a clear conflict of interest and can undermine the integrity of the sport.
