DAILY MANNA 2025 DEVOTIONAL

DATE: SUN, JAN 19, 2025

TITLE: USE OF INFORMATION

KEY VERSE:
"And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven." - (Nehemiah 1:4).

READ: Nehemiah 1:1-4 (KJV)

MESSAGE:
Andrew Stephen Grove, a Hungarian-American businessman and third CEO of Intel Corporation said, "How well we communicate is not determined by how well we say things but by how well we are understood."

Hanani, the brother of Nehemiah, informed him about the despicable and deplorable state of the holy city and the condition of the remnant escapee Israelites. The news made him sad and heavy-hearted. He was devastated, and as someone said, he "was thrown into a paroxysm of grief." What got Nehemiah who was occupying a powerful position in the Persian court so distressed? Why did he mourn, fast, and pray to the God of heaven? The effective communication about the fate of the remnant Jews and the deplorable state of Jerusalem!

Nehemiah did not forget his nativity, and his royal privileges did not make him indifferent to the plight of his people, especially when he got wind of the pathetic situation in Israel. But above these, his unique burden for the condition of the holy city of his God and his disposition and proactive plan to assist in the circumstance remain a challenge and an inspiration to modern-day believers.

How do we respond when we see the lamentable spiritual state of the Church or the embarrassing and deplorable socio-economic conditions of the people of God? Are we really concerned about how some assemblies have become too permissive and our solemn meetings have turned sensual? Modesty and sobriety are fast disappearing. Today, self-projecting worldly characters, and weird attires adorn the bodies of those handling sacred musical instruments, and we applaud them. Unfortunately, unlike Nehemiah, we hear of or see these abnormalities, and many believers remain undisturbed. We need passionate men and women with Nehemiah's burden and passion on our altars and pews today!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: You cannot act with passion on any information that doesn't first act on you.

DAILY MANNA 2024 DEVOTIONAL

TOPIC: THE GREAT FINAL CONVOCATION

READ: Revelation 20:11-15 (KJV)

KEY VERSE:
"And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works." - (Revelation 20:12).

MESSAGE:
The largest gathering of people recorded worldwide was in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India, on February 10, 2013. Reportedly boasting a staggering attendance of 120 million, the figure will be dwarfed by the massive assembly of several billions of souls who will show up before the great white throne of God in heaven. At His commandment, they will all mandatorily report from wherever on earth they had been held down by death from the time of man's creation to the present.

The great white throne judgment in heaven, will be presided over by the impartial Judge, the Lord Himself. All men who lived and died without Christ will be "judged, every man according to their works." There will be no miscarriage of justice. Man's imperfections will find no way into this great event in heaven. The "White Throne" indicates a trial and verdict that will not be tainted with corruption. Volumes of books on all men and their activities will be opened to reveal the truth. On that day, there will be no hiding place for the wicked.

That divine judgment awaits all hereafter with attendant consequences, good or bad, should focus our minds on the need to live as prescribed by God, in His word. Only faithful followers of Christ will be spared of this judgment. Sinners must confess and forsake their sins, receive pardon from Christ and acquittal from all evil. This is the only way to escape this final judgment.

There will be no proceedings based on hearsay, but on the deposition in the books of record that God keeps on every man on earth. The only exceptions to this rule are those whose names are in the book of life. These are people who have been washed in the blood of the Lamb of God. The name of every human being must fall into either of these two sets of books; the books of record or the book of life. Where do you fall? Now is the time to decide.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
In simple terms, you have the power to decide where to spend eternity.

TOPIC: A LESSON ON HUMILITY

READ: John 13:1-15 (KJV)

KEY VERSE:
"If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet." - (John 13:14).

MESSAGE:
D.L. Moody was the most famous evangelist in the world in the late 19th Century. A large group of European pastors attended his Bible Conference one year. They were given rooms in the dormitory of the Bible school. As was the custom in Europe, the men put their shoes outside the door of their room, expecting them to be cleaned and polished by servants during the night. Of course, no servants were in the American dorm, but as Moody walked through the halls, he saw the shoes and realised what had happened. He mentioned the problem to a few of his students, but none offered to help. Without another word, the great evangelist gathered up the shoes and took them to his room, where he began cleaning and polishing each pair.

Jesus washed the disciples' feet. Initially, Peter was not comfortable with the Master washing his feet, but later accepted when he realised the consequence. At last, the disciples learned that the Master wanted them to serve one another and avoid all forms of pride. Even by His condescending to die for the sins of humanity and His choice of disciples - poor and uneducated fishermen - are all examples of His life of humility.

There is a difference between a boss and a team leader. The boss gives commands and expects obedience while the team leader leads by example. There is so much ecclesiastical pride in churches today. We see pride in the carriage of many so-called men of God. People bow and cringe before them and they love it that way.

We can learn from Christ, who, even when He was to be arrested, required an insider to point Him out from the group. May this lesson prompt us to put away pride and live humbly.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Love and humility inspire followership.

TOPIC: GOD WILL FIGHT FOR YOU

READ: Exodus 17:8-16 (KJV)

KEY VERSE:
"And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi." - (Exodus 17:15).

MESSAGE:
Following their miraculous victory over a confederacy of Arab nations led by Egypt that fought against Israel in the famous six-day war of 1967, former Israeli president and wartime pilot, Major General Ezer Weizmann, simply said the victory was "The finger of God." The Israeli army was clearly outnumbered by the enemy nations' superior military power and experience, yet they fell in defeat before Israel in less than a week. When God fights for you, no power can stand before you.

In our reading today, the young nation of Israel had just left Egypt en route the Promised Land. They had not gone too far when the nation of Amalek rose up against them seeking to halt their forward journey to the land of promise. By this time, Israel had no standing army and was utterly inexperienced at warfare. However, through Moses, God instructed Joshua to rally a few men to face the Amalekites. While Joshua and his men engaged in the war, Moses, supported by Aaron and Hur, interceded for them; and God did fight for them. The Amalekites were defeated, and in praise to God, Moses raised an altar before the Lord in which he acknowledged God as their Banner, Jehovah Nissi!

No matter what enemy may confront us in the battle of life, we are confident of victory. This being the case, we do not have any reason to fear as Christians. The devil may attack our health and well-being, work and businesses, home and family life, or calling and ministries. In whichever form the attack may come, his primary focus is to stop our heavenward journey. This we must resist vehemently with faith in God.

We must resist the temptation to succumb to the enemy's threats. Fear will make us look away from God to other sources for help. Fear will make us surrender our liberty to the enemy and become his ensnared slave. But we must remember that the Lord is always with us as a mighty Man of war. He will fight for us and hand us the victory banner!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
When God fights for you, no enemy can withstand you!

TOPIC: STOP IT FROM SPREADING

READ: 1 Corinthians 5:5-8 (KJV)

KEY VERSE:
"Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?" - (1 Corinthians 5:6).

MESSAGE:
Leaven and yeast are similar. But there is a little difference between modern yeast and the leaven used in Bible day. The yeast we use today is a single-celled fungus often sold in a sanitary dry powder form. When added to bread dough, the yeast grows, producing gases that cause the dough to rise and become light and fluffy before it is baked. Yeast was rare in Bible day, but leaven was a much more common ingredient for baking bread.

Apostle Paul, in our text, directed the church to separate the immoral sinner from their midst as a form of church discipline. This means that they would no longer treat him as a believer, but as a heathen who needs salvation. Paul rebuked the leaders of the church sharply for treating the matter of immorality with levity.

Dealing with the sins of members of the church differs from those of people outside the faith. The church evangelizes the unbelievers in the world, but edifies the members of the church. The church has no right or power to judge or punish sinners outside of her fold. They are not under church authority. But if professing believers in the church wilfully commit sin, the leaders of the church are obligated to handle the situation by meting out swift discipline to the offender. Otherwise, evil will spread in the church and God will withdraw His presence and power.

There are various ways of enforcing church discipline. The erring believer can be warned and reproved. "But a man that is an heretic, after the first and second admonition, reject" (Titus 3:10). Sometimes, depending on the gravity of the sin, a church member can be placed on discipline or excommunicated from the church altogether. This will tell society that the church is different from the world. Love and truth, mercy and justice must go hand in hand, in line with God's word.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Sin spreads when sinning members are spared.

TOPIC: FATHERLY THOUGHTS

READ: Psalm 139:17-23 (KJV)

KEY VERSE:
"How precious also are Thy thoughts unto me, O God! How great is the sum of them!” - (Psalm 139:17).

MESSAGE:
We know how excited we become when an influential personality in society singles us out of the crowd, calls us by name and places a loving and assuring hand across our shoulders, tapping us gently and saying, "Look here, I have always thought about you. I love you and have wonderful plans for you. Just don't worry about anything. I have you in my mind and will always support you." This will indeed remove all fears, worries and anxieties.

Similarly, the psalmist here is excited about God's thoughts towards him. That the almighty God could focus on and think about him is mind-blowing for him. God had precious plans for him. He said they were very great when he summed up everything God was planning for him. As a result, he resolved to quit the company of wicked and sinful people, to always be on the side of God. He also wanted God to search his heart and free it from all evil ways.

Do you also know that God is thinking about you? Do you know that He has you well captured in His good plans? Yes, there are more than 7 billion people in the world, and you may wonder how God can find the time to look in your direction and think about you. He sees everyone and knows everyone. He knows you by name and thinks about you.

You will not be going around like a helpless orphan when you understand this and believe it firmly. Like the psalmist, all you need to do is ensure that you always stay on God's side. Quit the company of wicked and sinful men. Allow God to take control of your life and steer clear from sin. Then relax and watch His beautiful thoughts about you come to fruition.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Relax! You are always in God's thoughts.
