Drug abuse among professionals is an ongoing concern that often goes unnoticed.

The demands and pressures of professional life may drive individuals to seek comfort and relief in substances as a coping mechanism.The bad news is that this often remains hidden due to the stigma surrounding addiction in the workplace.

It is important that we begin to raise awareness about this issue and encourage open conversations around mental health especially with regards to stress management.

Young professionals must know that drug abuse can aggravate stress. Illegal drugs and substances can alter the brain's chemistry, affecting neurotransmitters responsible for regulating mood and stress. This disruption can lead to heightened stress responses.

If you are having a hard time at work, please talk to someone. If you are having a drug problem,seek professional help on time.

In the community I live in, I am known as a lawyer by adults, but among children and teenagers, I have been nicknamed "Drug Abuse." This is because of the message of drug abuse prevention I carry through BUSAOSOWO FOUNDATION. People have wondered if drug abuse is the only problem facing young people and why I insist on talking about drug abuse anytime I am with young people.

For more than a decade, I have worked with young people in formal and informal settings, and I can say boldly that nothing destroys a young person's life faster than drug abuse. Drug abuse has many evil wings. If a young person begins to experiment with drugs, the effect will spill into his academics. To sustain his newfound habit, he will need access to money frequently, and if he doesn't have the resources, he will steal. And when he begins to steal, the possibility of engaging in physical violence is tripled. If violence enters the picture, death is not far off. In this cycle, every facet of society is dragged into the consequences resulting from that young person's involvement with drugs.

With little or no systems for drug recovery and rehabilitation in Nigeria,many young people doing drugs have no hope of being clean. If their loved ones don't have the money to bear the burden of rehabilitation,they will either depend on the supernatural power of God or hope that a non-profit organization will reach out to help. Many families have been pushed to their limits because of the drug problems of their children.

Even if the drug abuse situation in Nigeria is tiring, all hope is not lost, especially for families struggling with multiple cases of drug use by their children. Rehabilitation is still available in Nigeria. In my next post, I will share more on this.

However, prevention remains the best. Let's add our voice and speak out against drug use. Parents and teachers must help young people build resistance against drug abuse by equipping them with life, social, and vocational skills they need to deal with everyday challenges without having to turn to drugs.
