While sŭïcïdé isn’t a new thing in human history, it’s frequency amongst GenZs and Millennials born towards the end of the 90s really calls for a reevaluation on how the system is structured against this group of people from infancy.
I’ve often said that the academic and religious systems in which GenZs are raised in often gets them unprepared for the realities of life that awaits them.
When you start out your academic journey in a private nursery and primary school where you were never flogged either by your teacher or your parents when you were wrong; and where if you performed poorly, they’d be hesitant to fail or discipline you because of the huge sums your parents pay as school fees, chances are that you might not get the memo early enough that life is not a bed of roses.
To make matters worse, if your parents are “Christians” in Nigeria, with the limited options of solid bible-based churches, if you were raised in one of these Pentecostal/Charismatic “churches” where you are taught that you can speak whatever you want into existence, and you buy into this nonsense, your delusion about life thus becomes totally sealed, and so begins the countdown of your doom.
When your school days are over, and you’re done deluding yourself in church, Nigeria will be waiting to knock some hard realities into your senses. This will now present you with the options of either taking the easy way out, or coming to terms with reality so you can fight for your life.
WAY FORWARD
1) You must come to terms with the reality that life is hard, and that life is a battle. It’s a fight we engage in till the end. This will help you to fortify mind in preparation for the troubled days ahead.
2) Avoid unrealistic expectations. Don’t let anyone who can’t even control his hiccups delude you into thinking and believing that you can speak whatever you want into existence. You can’t! It is only God that has the ability to speak things into existence —not you. You’re just a mere mortal like the rest of us.
3) Discipline yourself to learn that it’s totally fine to fail sometimes. In the early days of my company, we once wrote over 2,000 letters (both physical and electronic) to companies, and only got 2 responses, and they weren’t even serious deals. But today, jobs just come with little or no effort. Imagine if we had committed suicide.
4) Irrespective of what job you’re currently on, try and know the marketable skills needed by companies, and do your best to learn them. I have lost count of how many students (who are not even graduates) that I’ve trained in design and tech skills that are doing pretty great today.
5) No Christ, no peace! Know Christ, know peace!! The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Repent today, and run to Christ for the salvation of your soul.
May God give the family of the deceased the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
