And finally, we were back from villa. I could smell the familiar air which tho I didn't really miss but was happy to perceive.
We had bags packed to a brim with one fully stocked with foodstuffs. Inside were lots of plantains and bananas, coconuts and palm kernel which the Igbos often call “akwu”.
The next morning, my mom instructed me to boil the akwu and later spread under the sun. I did exactly that and went back inside, while close to evening, she told me to bring it in knowing fully well that dusk was setting and dew was soon to drop on the akwu.
I got to where it was spread and to my greatest surprise, the akwu was raided by ants, massive ones to be precise. The sudden invasion swept all kinds of thoughts into my teeny brain as I remembered that it will later be eaten.
I had a calm nerve after remembering that it will be put on fire which will apparently cause all forms of germs to die but I still wasn't contented. I reached out to my mom through her room window and after explaining, she told me to use a broom to chase them away. With immediate effect; 10 minutes so to say, I chased them all out, killing some out of anger or what you may call fright.
Believe me or not, it was a nasty experience because as a claustrophobic person, the sight was surreal.
