How many vaccines have we toyed with already and yet no significant impact on the results? Do we even have a pressing malaria need?

Iodized Salt

Iodized Salt
Iodized salt is simply regular table salt that has had a small amount of iodine added to it. This is done to help prevent iodine deficiency, which can lead to thyroid problems, like goiter (an enlarged thyroid) or developmental issues, especially in children.

Iodine is an essential nutrient that our bodies need to produce thyroid hormones, which are important for regulating metabolism, growth, and development. In many parts of the world, the soil has low levels of iodine, and therefore, the foods grown there, like vegetables, don't contain much of it.

By adding iodine to salt, a common food item used in most households, people can easily get the iodine they need without having to rely on supplements or specific foods. It's a simple, effective way to ensure everyone gets enough of this vital nutrient.

Why it matters:
Goiter prevention: Iodine deficiency can cause the thyroid gland to swell, which is called a goiter. Iodized salt helps avoid this.

Brain development: Adequate iodine is especially important during pregnancy and early childhood for proper brain development.

Prevalence: Iodized salt is an inexpensive, easy method to prevent iodine deficiency in populations where iodine-rich foods might not be available.

Many countries around the world have adopted iodized salt as a public health measure, ensuring that the population gets enough iodine and avoiding the health problems associated with iodine deficiency.

Reset and restart

After a rough week, I decided it was time for a mental reset, so I planned an evening walk. I needed fresh air and time to clear my head. My trousers had small pockets that couldn't hold my phone, so I grabbed my side bag, tossed in some cash, and slung it over my shoulder. With the bag secure and the sun starting to set, I began my stroll, ready to let the week’s stress melt away.

The walk was perfect, I explored new corners and bathed in the fading sunlight. After about 40 minutes, the sun bowed out, signaling the end of my little adventure. On my way back, I stopped at a roadside stall to grab some fried yam. The crisp, warm snack in hand was a reward for surviving the week. I ate some of it as I walked home, enjoying the moment.

As I entered my street, a guy approached me, asking if I lived nearby. I said no, keeping it short to avoid any unnecessary interactions. Something about him felt off, and I wasn’t in the mood to let anyone disrupt my mental peace. He didn’t take the hint, though, and kept edging closer. When he crossed into my personal space, my instincts flared up. I didn’t like his vibe, so I gracefully shifted away, keeping my distance.

That’s when I spotted them, two other guys walking toward us from different angles. The realization hit me; they were likely trying to corner me. My heart picked up pace, but I kept my movements calm and calculated. I took another step back, creating space between me and all three of them. I guess they weren’t expecting me to notice so quickly because they paused, watching me like hungry toddlers.

I didn’t wait around to see what they’d do next. I walked off confidently, not rushing but keeping my strides purposeful till I disappeared into the dark.

One more close call

One more close call
The heat that day was unbearable, and the sun seemed determined to roast me alive as I made my way home. By the time I arrived, I was completely drained. Cooking was out of the question, so I forced myself to go downstairs and grab some groundnuts. It was quick and easy, no energy wasted.

After eating, sleep took over immediately. That nap was magic because I woke up feeling completely refreshed. As I stretched and gathered myself, my mum called. I stepped outside to take the call, enjoying the fresh air while we chatted. It felt good to be up and moving after such a rough day.

But what I saw when I returned inside shocked me. My wall hanger had fallen right onto my bed, the exact spot where I had been sleeping just minutes before. I froze for a moment, thinking of what could’ve happened if I hadn’t woken up and stepped out when I did. The thought alone gave me chills.
Looking at the mess, all I could do was thank God for His timing.
