Don′t Give Up

Can you think of a time recently where something was so hard that you just wanted to give up, but you didn't? Where did you draw strength from? What kept you going?

One of the most incredible parts of being a Christ-follower is that our own strength is only part of the equation. God's strength wells up in us. Psalm 46:1 says, "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." How incredible that it doesn't say, "A sometimes present help." He is "a very present help."

In 2 Chronicles 15, we see that Asa, King of Judah, was up against major challenges—he had been trying to refocus the nation of Judah on God after years of idolatry and war. He was facing a huge challenge! Through the prophet Azariah, God spoke this encouragement to him to build him up:

"But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded."
2 Chronicles 15:7 NIV

God knew what Asa faced. He knew every detail of the burden, and all that was at stake. God also knew the strength He could provide to someone willing to rely on Him. He didn't say, "Good luck out there, that looks rough so don't blow it." He said, "But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded."

Just as Asa heard these words and took courage, we can take courage, too. We are not alone. We can rely on God's strength. The reward is coming. Don't give up.

Communication That Creates Connection

George Bernard Shaw said: "The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place." When I think back over my own disagreements, disconnections, and misunderstandings, I can definitely see his point!

Communication is the battleground where relationships are often won or lost. It is of vital Importance for the health of our relationships, and in today's passage, the Bible breathes its ancient wisdom into the complex area of communication.

Proverbs praises a "soothing" and "wise" tongue and commends "a gentle answer."

Thinking back over your recent communication with friends and family, could your words be described as "wise" and "gentle"? Or have they been more "harsh"?

How might you use the power of your words to plant "a tree of life" in place of strife and anger today?

Elsewhere in Proverbs, it says "the tongue has the power of life and death" (Proverbs 18:21).

We don't always realize it but the Bible is crystal clear: our words carry immense power. They can calm a storm or ignite a fire. Build a relationship or break it. Bring life or crush others. The way we communicate shapes the lives of those around us more than we often realize.

Think about how Jesus communicated. He didn't just talk; He connected. Whether He was speaking to a crowd or an individual, His words invited people into something deeper.

How often do our words do the opposite? We fire off a snarky reply. We let frustration dictate our tone. Mostly we don't mean to hurt, but in a world full of noise, it's easy to let our words get lost in the chaos or worse, add to it.

The truth is, good communication doesn't happen by accident. It requires intentionality. It takes slowing down enough to listen and asking the Spirit to guide our words.

Mother Theresa said, "Words which do not give the light of Christ increase the darkness."

What if, today, you made the decision to bring light to every conversation?

Every act of communication is an opportunity to create connection or to cause distance. The power lies with you. The power is in your tongue!

Let's close in prayer with the words of Saint Francis of Assisi.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;

to be understood as to understand;

to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

A Worthy Guide

Is it possible to live a life that honors God? Is it achievable to train our minds and bodies to do what we know is right—instead of feeling powerless against temptation?

Paul’s letter to the churches in Galatia is a guide for such questions:

“So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.”
Galatians 5:16

Without surrendering and submitting to God’s lead, our sinful nature is at war with what God has for us.

Left to ourselves, we crave what the world desires. And the more we give into our unique shades of temptation, the more we crave (like craving sweets for the sugar, or craving pornography for the dopamine rush). But with the help of the Holy Spirit, who softens and molds and reshapes our hearts, we can learn to crave what God’s deemed best.

To put it simply, the secret to living a godly life is the Holy Spirit. And the Holy Spirit just so happens to be God—one of the three persons of the Trinity: the Father, the Son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit.

Jesus has already done the hard and beautiful work of salvation—by living, dying, and rising again for the sake of His children—but now He wants to continue His mighty work in us and through us.

If it sounds impossible, it is impossible—if you’re fighting by yourself. But, as Jesus told His disciples, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.” (Mark 10:27 NIV) The psalmist also brought another valuable perspective, writing, “How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word.” (Psalms‬ ‭119:9‬ ‭NIV)‬‬

When we cling to His Word, which was inspired by the Holy Spirit, it’s not only possible—but also probable—to live a life that honors Him.

Prayer
God, I want to walk with You. Help me to crave a life that is led by You. Today, please fill me with Your Spirit’s wisdom, power, and strength. Give me the courage to be still and trust You. Teach me to listen to Your Spirit, and show me how to obey You faithfully and follow You boldly. In Jesus’ name, Amen

A New Paradigm

Before Jesus, God’s people operated under the law of Moses. When it came to personal injury and harm, the rules were clear and seemed fair: an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth (Exodus 21:24). Essentially, for each hurt that someone caused, an equal hurt should be visited upon that person.

But then, Jesus came. Jesus turned the idea of fairness upside down. During the famous Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5, Jesus says:

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.”
Matthew 5:38-39 NIV

Jesus didn’t just adjust God’s people’s understanding of how they treated others. He preached a completely new paradigm:

Love others even if they hate you.
Serve others even if they mistreat you.
Pray for others even if they persecute you.

The Apostle Peter, who likely wrote the books of 1 and 2 Peter, was one of the disciples with Jesus on the hillside during the Sermon on the Mount. In a letter to believers years after Jesus’ death and resurrection, Peter repeats Jesus’ teaching:

Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.
1 Peter 3:9 NIV

There was nothing Jesus asked of us that He didn’t model Himself. If He had operated out of an eye-for-eye, tooth-for-tooth paradigm, how could we have ever been saved by His sacrifice? Out of pure love and forgiveness, Jesus gave His life for us. He offered a new paradigm. He taught us a better way.

I love how intentional Steve Jobs was when he created the iPhone. The i has five meanings that are connected to what the iPhone already does and no one would have ever guessed that it has that number of meanings.
“What is the meaning of ′i′ in iPhone, iPad, and other Apple products? There′s not one but five answers to - The Times of India”

Our Daily Bread

In Matthew 6, Jesus’ disciples ask Him how they should pray. So Jesus teaches them a very simple prayer that covers the basic areas of life. Jesus’ model for prayer orients our hearts toward God and His kingdom work on earth. And in the middle of that prayer, Jesus prays, “Give us today our daily bread.”

What Jesus is showing us is this: God wants us to bring everything to Him in prayer—even the small things. God cares about us and our needs.

This prayer also points out that it is God who gives us good things and provides for us. While it may seem like we earn our own basic necessities, it is actually God who gives us our breath and our ability to work and earn a wage. God even created the very food that we eat.

Everything we have comes from God. That means we can spend time in prayer thanking Him for what He has given us, and talking to Him about our needs.

What’s significant is that Jesus doesn’t ask for God to provide His needs for tomorrow or next week —He only asks for His needs today. Our whole life can change in an instant, and things we’ve stored up for years can be taken away. But Jesus teaches us to depend on God to meet our needs day by day. Dependence on God takes trust—but when we trust in Him, we end up living by God’s power and provision rather than our own.

Take some time today and thank God for what He has given you. Thank Him for taking care of your basic needs each and every day, and ask God to continue to meet your needs each and every day. Consider how you can live with an increasing awareness of God as your provider. He loves you and cares for you.

The Names of God in Hebrew

When Moses asked God's name at a burning bush in the desert, God responded by saying, "I AM That I AM." In Hebrew, this phrase is "Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh" )אהיה אשר אהיה, pronounced "eh-yeh a-share eh-yeh"), which can be translated several ways including "I exist," or "I will exist," or "I will be," or even "I am who I will be."

In a world of constant change, the name Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh reveals God as eternally present and unchanging.

This name teaches us that God's nature remains constant - He is as faithful, loving, and powerful today as He was in biblical times. It was a declaration that God exists outside of time, unchanging in His character and promises.

The same God who led Israel through the wilderness leads us through our challenges today. His character hasn't diminished; His promises haven't expired.

Consider the areas of your life experiencing change or uncertainty.

Take time today to write down three of God's unchanging attributes or promises that speak to these situations. Return to these truths throughout your week, remembering that while circumstances change, Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh remains constant.

Prayer:

Eternal God, thank You for being unchanging when everything else shifts. Help me anchor my life in Your constant nature.

The Place to Start

There are so many places that we can go to learn about something new and grow in knowledge. Books are full of free access to learn anything you can dream up. The internet is also overloaded with content and ways to learn about any subject imaginable.

While those are great places to start when building knowledge, Scripture tells us that the beginning of all knowledge is fear of God. This means that while we can learn things from anyone, the beginning of true knowledge begins with God.

The fear of the Lord doesn’t necessarily mean that you should be afraid of God. What it means is that we should live our lives in awe of Him. We do this first by recognizing who He is. He is the creator and source of all things. He is all-powerful and all-knowledgeable. God’s Word says He holds the power of life and death in His hands. These are certainly attributes that should cause us to be in awe of God.

Scripture also tells us that God is loving, gracious, and merciful. Even though we, His own creation, previously abandoned Him and rebelled against Him, God graciously gave us access back to Himself through His Son, Jesus. The God who created the universe loves each and every one of us.

Knowing God rightly and being in awe of who He is and what He has done is the beginning of all knowledge.

We would be foolish to turn away from such a powerful and gracious God. While we can learn a lot about many different things through a book or the internet, the most essential and important piece of knowledge about God Himself comes from His Word.

Spend some time with God in prayer, thanking Him for who He is and what He has done for you. Begin a habit of reading Scripture regularly so that you can come to know Him more and more.

Heartbroken But Not Broken

Heartbroken But Not Broken
It was the eve of Christmas, while other family members went about doing their last minute shopping and preparations, Ada sat at the backyard of her father’s compound, chin on hand, lost in thought. As tears flowed freely on her face, she remembered her last conversation with Victor, her ex-boyfriend.

Victor didn’t have much but he took care of her and her five siblings who depended on her for their upkeep, since their parents didn't have much. Ada had been the breadwinner of her family since she was 18, and when she met Victor she thought she had met a life saver or an angel because he took up the burden of taking care of her and her family. Ada then relaxed and only focused more on loving him and doing his bidding.

One fateful day, Victor had had enough and he started lashing out on Ada at any slightest provocation, on further interrogation, he shouted at Ada and said her family members were parasites who were out to suck him dry with their unending demands. Ada cried her eyes out at this revelation, but Victor was no longer having it so he told her he no longer wanted to have anything to do with her ever again. This broke her down emotionally and broke her spirit because she thought she had found the 'one' in Victor.

After much efforts to win Victor's heart back, Ada finally summoned courage and left the city to clear her head. She had been in the village ever since almost withering away because of her constant tears and depression.

She finally returned to reality and vowed within herself that she was not going into another relationship until she gets a job and is able to stand on her feet financially, after all Victor had moved on and had even gotten married to someone else, who she heard was rich and doing well for herself. With this new resolve, Ada wiped her tears and went to bed, because it was already evening.

After months of job hunting and doing menial jobs to survive, Ada finally got a well paying job and was able to take care of her folks back home. On one occasion, a colleague of hers jokingly said he was going to get her a husband, and that was how he introduced her to Richard.

Ada made sure she wasn't dependent on Richard for anything because she didn't want history to repeat itself. In fact she made sure she got things for Richard instead and even cooked for him with her money. Even when Richard would insist on giving her money Ada would reject it, saying she really wanted to do it. In less than a year, Richard knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Ada, and wasted no time in popping the question. They both got married in an intimate wedding ceremony, with friends and family members present. And after the ceremony the first gift Richard got for Ada was a brand new car. Even though Richard is a generous man, Ada still makes sure she contributes her quota to the family and does her best for her siblings as well.
