The lost note
John was a hardworking young man who always believed in the sanctity of the law. One day, as he walked home from work, he saw a piece of paper lying in the middle of the road. On closer inspection, it turned out to be a Naira note - a one-thousand Naira note, to be precise. John could hardly believe his luck – he had never seen that much money before.
Excited, John checked around to see if anyone had dropped it but there was no one in the area. But as he pondered what to do with the money, his conscience urged him to report the matter to the nearest police station, just to be sure.
John picked up the Naira note and began a frantic quest to locate the police station. He asked people for directions, but everyone seemed to point in different directions. The first walked past a group of students who were dancing and chanting, "students are online", and asked for directions. One of them directed him to a dilapidated building a few meters away, saying it was the police station. John looked at it skeptically but decided to go ahead.
On reaching the building, he saw that it was a deserted factory, with broken windows and boarded-up doors. There were no signs of life or evidence that it was ever a police station. As he pondered what to do next, a man came walking out of the building next door. John asked him where the police station was, and the man chuckled and pointed to a tin shed next to the factory.
John hurried over to the shed, and there he found four cars parked haphazardly outside. There was a handwritten sign on the wall that read "Police". John's heart leaped with joy – he had finally found the police station!
John walked in with the Naira note and met a sleepy looking police officer sitting at a rickety table, smacking his lips as if he had been dozing off. John explained to the officer why he was there and handed over the note to him.
The officer looked at the Naira note intently for a moment and then started laughing hysterically. John was taken aback and began to wonder if he had made a mistake by coming to the police station. "What could be so funny?" he thought.
The officer finally managed to catch his breath and turned to John, grinning from ear to ear. "Congratulations, my friend! You've just become a millionaire!" he shouted.
John was puzzled, not sure what the officer meant, but then he realized his mistake – he had found a foreign currency note, not a Nigerian Naira note. It was a one-thousand Ghana Cedi note which was equivalent to a little over N65,500.
Red-faced with embarrassment, John tried to explain his misunderstanding, but the officer simply chuckled and handed John back the note, thanking him for his honesty and telling him to have a good day.
John left the police station with a sheepish grin on his face, shaking his head in disbelief. He had gone on a wild goose chase, mistook a foreign currency note for a Nigerian one, and embarrassed himself in front of a police officer – all for a worthless piece of paper.
But, John's honesty and his quest for doing the right thing brought him an unexpected reward – a newfound respect for himself and a tale to tell for years to come.
